The
Birman cat, also know as the Sacred Cat of Burma, is still today a relatively
rare breed of cat. It has a medium length silky coat that does not matt,
blue eyes, and a heavy, stocky body. However some pedigree lines are
not as big, heavy and stocky and are more petite. The four feet have
white gloves and the back feet have a white V running up the back of
the hock (referred to as the laces). It is a color pointed cat. The
cat has a friendly, dog-like personality. Very affectionate and laid
back, with a sweet expression to their face. Birmans like to follow
their owners from room to room to see what they are up to. They are
extremely intelligent cats, somewhat talkative with their owners, and
always ready for play.
The
history of the cat is steeped in legend and mystery.. Originating in
Burma, they were honored and revered Temple Cats that lived with the
priests. Each thought to carry the soul of a priest.
A
pair of Birmans were smuggled out of Burma in the early 1900's and sent
to France. The pregnant female survived the journey, the male did not.
The breed then had to be outcrossed to survive. And survive it did to
continue the legend and history of the Birman cat today.
